The Centre Hospitalier International de Calavi receives patients from across Benin and the region. Ongoing treatment means weeks on the spot — and a family who has to sleep somewhere and be on time for the morning appointment.
Where the CHIC actually is
The CHIC is not in Cotonou: it sits at Abomey-Calavi, about ten kilometres to the north-west, on the road that runs from the bridge towards Calavi. It is the country's largest reference hospital — over four hundred beds, eight poles covering eighteen specialties — and its wards, its radiotherapy service and its laparoscopic surgery are running.
The furnished accommodation, meanwhile, is in Cotonou. That is where the maintained homes are, the guardians, the cleaning teams and a concierge that answers at night. Twenty minutes on the road early, up to forty-five at rush hour: we set the car's departure accordingly.

- Où loger près du CHIC de Calavi ?
- Le CHIC se trouve à Abomey-Calavi, une dizaine de kilomètres au nord-ouest de Cotonou. L'offre de logement meublé est à Cotonou, pas à Calavi : nos maisons de Fidjrossè, Cadjèhoun et Cocotiers sont à vingt à quarante-cinq minutes de l'hôpital selon l'heure et le trafic sur la route de Calavi.
- Combien de temps met-on de Cotonou au CHIC ?
- Comptez vingt minutes tôt le matin et jusqu'à quarante-cinq minutes aux heures de pointe. Pour un rendez-vous du matin, nous faisons partir la voiture avant sept heures.
- Proposez-vous des séjours de plusieurs semaines ?
- Oui, et c'est le cas le plus fréquent pour un traitement suivi. Au-delà de deux semaines, le tarif bascule sur la grille quinzaine puis mois, nettement plus avantageuse que la nuitée. La maison reste la même du début à la fin.
- Organisez-vous le transport vers l'hôpital ?
- Oui : voiture climatisée et chauffeur qui connaît la route, réservés à l'avance pour chaque rendez-vous, avec attente sur place si la consultation se prolonge.
