Day trips from Cotonou

Benin is next door.

Cotonou is not a destination, it is a base. The palaces of Abomey, the lake village of Ganvié, the Door of No Return: all of it is a day trip, and you come home to sleep. These are the five outings we arrange most, with the real distances and the real timings.

Common questions

What can I visit around Cotonou in a day?
Ouidah and its Slave Route (41 km), Ganvié the lake village (30 minutes by road, then by pirogue), Porto-Novo the capital (35 km), and Grand-Popo and its beach (86 km) can all be done as day trips. Abomey and its UNESCO-listed royal palaces (133 km) need a full day.
Do I need to hire a car to visit Benin?
For a day trip, a driver often works out cheaper than a hire car and spares you the worry of parking and road conditions. Léna Escapes arranges the driver for its guests, and the driver waits for you during the visits.
How many days do I need to visit southern Benin?
Four to five days from Cotonou cover Ouidah, Ganvié, Porto-Novo, Abomey and Grand-Popo without rushing, heading back to your own place every evening.
